    Investigating Slow Wi-Fi

    1. Your WiFi Analyzer PRO Dashboard gives an instant view into the key characteristics of the current environment. You can select from 12 different charts to show (1). Each chart provides direct links to valuable information behind the data, so you don’t have to decide where you need to go next. The Channel Utilization chart (2), for example, shows the top channels by airtime utilization. Since high airtime utilization is a common cause of slow user throughput, select a channel showing high utilization; channel 6 in this case.

    2. The WiFi Analyzer PRO presents a detailed breakdown of utilization on the selected channel 6. Here you can easily see utilization levels over time, broken down by transmission rates (1). For example, you can see most of the utilization is consumed with low-rate transmissions at 1 Mbps (colored red) (2). This results in overall low throughput on the channel. You can also see spikes in throughput (3) (which is good) correlated in time with a fair amount of relatively high rates at 54-300 Mbps (green). These high rates contribute very little to overall channel utilization shown on the left chart but contribute greatly to channel throughput shown on the right chart.

    3. You can expand the statistics table (1) to see what percentage of the utilization is due to each transmission rate, 802.11 media type, and even frame type. For example, since most of this channel’s utilization is due to low 1Mbps traffic rates, you can see what utilization is due to control and management traffic which is transmitted at low legacy rates. In this case, 26% of the utilization is control frames (2) and 30% is management frames (3). A whopping 20% are retry frames (4), which indicates performance problems.

    4. You can expand the statistics table even further (1) to see what kind of control and management frames are contributing to high channel utilization at low transmission rates. There might be a lot of control frames due to too many devices on the channel, a result of co-channel interference. This might be what is causing the high retry rate.

    1. When a user complains about their connection not performing well, WiFi Analyzer PRO can be used to quickly get to the heart of the matter. The Infrastructure screen lists all elements found in the environment: SSIDs, APs, Stations, and Channels. You can view a list of stations (1), for example, and select the user’s specific one. This will present the AP to which the user is connected (2), as well as useful graphs and statistics showing the real-time state of the connection (3).

    2. The Efficiency screen provides details about a specific AP-to-Station connection. (1) Information provided includes how much traffic is being transmitted with the enhanced capabilities of 802.11n or 802.11ac, such as modulation and coding schemes, wide channel widths, short guard interval, and frame aggregation (2). Seeing what capabilities are supported by the station, and how much traffic is sent with those capabilities will quickly determine why the user may not be seeing the performance they expect. In addition, a clear description of each capability is provided (3) to explain what it all means.

On the Infrastructure screen you can view the entire WLAN environment by SSID, AP, channel, station, etc. If you select an AP on your network, a wealth of information on its current performance is made available. For example, you can see how much traffic is sent to/from that AP by traffic type, transmission rate, and connected station (1).

    1. Roaming from one AP to another on a WLAN is a critical and complicated process. WiFi Analyzer PRO makes the analysis of roaming simply by providing key information on one screen. Capturing data on multiple channels allows analysis of a device’s roam from one AP and channel to another, so you can see both sides of a roaming event. You can see key data for the roam (1) as well as top reasons the roam may have occurred (2) and a simple thumbs up / thumbs down as to whether a particular roam improved characteristics for the client (3).

    2. Selecting a Roaming Reason will display a chart of measurements before and after the roam (1). In this case, the chart shows each AP’s signal strength before and after the roam occurred. Separate charts are available for each roaming reason given for the particular roam of interest.
